The most important holiday celebration in Hoi An is the Full Moon Lantern Festival. This festival takes place around the 14th day of the Lunar month, and manages to turn Hoi An into a mystical town cut off from technology and modernity. During the festival, all electricity is shut down, and instead, beautiful multi-colored candles and lanterns fill the streets of Hoi An. The festival honors the ancestors, and flowers, fruits, lanterns and candles are being exchanged in order to secure prosperity and good fortune. It is a beautiful experience to walk around the streets and inhale the warm atmosphere of this festival, along with tasting delicious street food and visiting local pagodas. Apart from the Full Moon Lantern Festival, one of the most important holidays in Vietnam is the Tet Vietnamese New Year. Depending on the Lunar calendar, the New Year takes place around January/February. Celebrations can even go on for an entire week, with gift exchanges, family gatherings, food, drinks and social activities.
