The Origin of Dubai Tour: Souks, Sheiks & Spices
Traveling by myself for a number of weeks, it took me a couple of days to figure out the lay of the land and create a schedule for my trip. First on my list was the 3 hour walking tour of the Cultural Village with Kasim, whose nickname at the time was Mr. Street Smart. Totally wrong. He was an outstanding ambassador for this city, the culture and the people. With some serious trepidation (I don't generally travel on my own) I arrived to meet my tour guide. Kasim showed up with a huge smile on his face and I started to relax. He introduced himself and told me about himself and asked me to introduce myself and impart similar background information. Information like my family, my hobbies, what i did for work etc. We began our tour. Right off the bat, Kasim was sharing information about the culture, religion and people through some really interesting history! The cultural village is a great place to gain understanding of this city, which is a true melting pot. At one point, the information he asked me to share at the beginning of the tour kicked in. He paused at a corner and said, "i don't generally turn here, but i think there is something you would like to see." He couldn't have been more right. Thank you to Kasim for sharing your culture and history with me, broadening my understanding of this wonderful city! I'm starting the campaign to change his name to Kasim, Mr Ambassador!
