Travel in Madrid
In Madrid it could hardly be easier to travel like a local, because the public transit system is modern, efficient and cheap. What's great is that the buses and Metro are all part of the same network, which makes it easy to purchase the right tickets. You can be sure that if you can't reach a destination by bus then there will be a Metro station close by instead. The Metro is the second-largest in Europe behind London and features ticket machines with four different languages at every station.
By road, it is not recommended to drive a car in the city, as the roads can be very intense and traffic jams are common. Taxis are all white with a red stripe and are affordable, provided you are aware of the special surcharges that apply for certain times of day and destinations. Official taxis will provide a table with a full list on demand.
