Travel in Madrid

In Madrid it could hardly be easier to travel like a local, because the public transit system is modern, efficient and cheap. What's great is that the buses and Metro are all part of the same network, which makes it easy to purchase the right tickets. You can be sure that if you can't reach a destination by bus then there will be a Metro station close by instead. The Metro is the second-largest in Europe behind London and features ticket machines with four different languages at every station.

By road, it is not recommended to drive a car in the city, as the roads can be very intense and traffic jams are common. Taxis are all white with a red stripe and are affordable, provided you are aware of the special surcharges that apply for certain times of day and destinations. Official taxis will provide a table with a full list on demand.

Local Transport in Madrid

  • Most locals will use the bus or Metro to get around. A single will cover five stations and cost €1.50, while ten trips will cost between €12.20 and €18.30.
  • Alternatively you could get a day pass for €6 or a weekly pass for €33.40.
  • Metro signs are easy to spot; they are a rhombus with red trim, and "Metro" in white on a blue background.
  • If you're travelling late at night there's a large network of night buses travelling every 20 minutes from designated stops

Madrid Street Photography Workshop

If you're in Madrid and have a desire to improve your photography skills, you should absolutely take this walking tour with Julio! Along with a group of coworkers, I signed up for Julio's tour and came away with a new arsenal of tricks for taking better photos. We did went our first day in the city, so Julio also helped us get a feel for the different neighborhoods in Madrid. Highly recommend taking this tour for an introduction to Madrid, and for improved photography!

Madrid's Favorite Food Tour: The 10 Tastings

We had a wonderful time exploring the streets, sounds and flavors of Madrid.
Jillian, our guide, was very knowledgeable and navigated us savvily. We had several dietery restrictions but she was able to improvise on the fly making the experience very enjoyable for all of us.
If you are in Madrid and want to go on a gastronomical exploration of authentic local samplings, I recommend this tour and recommend Jillian even highly.
