Best Local markets in Madrid

Some say that if you want to get a real glimpse of daily life in the city, from the way Madrileños eat, to how they do business and interact with each other, then there's no better place to go than one of the many markets. Some are permanent, and these are where you'll find fresh food, while others are held on weekends or once a month, and are ideal for finding antiques and handicrafts.

7 Other Great Markets in Madrid

  • Mercado de Motores takes place on the second weekend of every month in the Railway Museum and features stalls selling vintage items, including vinyl, books, furniture and decorative items
  • Mercado Central de Diseño is held in Matadero Madrid in Legazpi on the first weekend of every month and is the place to check out the great work of Madrid-based designers and artists
  • Mercado San Antón is a great place to come if you want to regional specialities from around Spain, like Basque pintxos, Asturian cider or Madrid-style stew
  • Cuesta de Moyano is the name given to the hill near Atocha Station, on which you'll find a permanent book fair made up of 30 stalls selling new releases and out of print books
  • Mercado de la Paz, dating back 130 years, is found in the upmarket Salamanca neighbourhood and is the place to find artisan speciality foods, fresh fish and superb tapas
  • Rave Market held in La Latina has to be Madrid's most unique market, where people come together to trade their unwanted stuff and also dance to DJ sets
  • Mercado Anton Martin near the Metro station is a classic Spanish food market, set over two levels dedicated to fresh produce food stalls and specialty food shops
