Airport in Madrid

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) is the air transport hub for Madrid. It's the busiest airport in Spain and one of the largest flight destinations in Europe. Barajas is the base for Iberia Airlines, which is Spain's flag carrier and, has four terminals: 1, 2 and 3 are clustered close together, while the recently-constructed terminal 4 is a little further away. Barajas has flight routes between a host of European cities, and intercontinental links to numerous South American and Central American destinations, as well as airports in North Africa, the Persian Gulf and the Far East.

When you arrive in a new country after a long flight, working out the different ways to get around can make your head spin. If you feel daunted by the idea of making your way from the airport by yourself you'll be pleased to know that there are Withlocals guides in Madrid that offer airport transfers. This means peace-of-mind as you'll have one less detail to plan before your trip. And of course, locals will know the most direct routes from the airport, making sure that you'll get to your accommodation as quickly and comfortably as possible.

Public Transport around Airport in Madrid

There are several public transport choices after landing. Most visitors will simply catch the 24-hour Express Bus Service, which departs every 12 minutes by day or 35 minutes late at night. It serves central Madrid destinations such as O'Donell, Cibeles and Atocha, and costs €5. It will take about half an hour to get to Cibeles from Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and 40 minutes from Terminal 4. Terminal 4 is also on a commuter train-line, the C1, and for €2.15 you can get to the Atocha and Chamartin stations without having to change. Another option is to take Metro Line 8 (pink), but this will require two changes to get to central Madrid so is less convenient.

Best of Madrid: Highlights & Hidden Gems

We were guided by Beth our the first day in Madrid. We would definitely recommend you to do the same! Her enthousiasm, knowledge of local habits, history, Spanish culture and different types of food will enable you to better organize your holiday afterwards!
If lucky, you would might meet her ‘great little’ dog Duke.

Classic Cooking Class: Paella, Tapas & Sangria with Market Visit

Ana and her husband, Taco, hosted us at their apartment for "Classic Cooking Class: Paella, Tapas & Sangria" and it was fun and yummy! Whenever I travel with my kids I always feel a little guilty for our "consumption tourism" b/c we often don't get to see how locals live, cook, and interact. This was the perfect solution. Taco met us at the market and we saw a proper food market (versus the touristy San Miguel) and walked to their apartment from there. We sat at Ana's kitchen counter and helped her chop, sautee, combine spices and prepare mussels, calamari, and prawns (something we'd have never done at home). She told us about her grandmother's paella secrets and her and Taco's family (they're both from Barcelona). It was a VERY special night. Thanks, Ana and Taco!!

A customized trip with Enrique

On last Saturday we had a tapas tour with Enrique. He took us to 3 amazing tapas bars. We had an amazing experience and the tapas and drinks were great. Enrique is an amazing tour guide and very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. There was great wine, great drinks, great conversation and a great tour guide. A 10 out of 10. We will suggest anyone to go on this tour.
