Best Nightlife spots in Lisbon

Lisbon is becoming one of Europe’s trendiest cities. Aside from the glamorous clubs around town, there’s also a place for those who love jazz, alternative music, punk and rock, electronic, house, classical music, and of course, Fado music. Lisbon is also home to a flourishing gay scene, and has attracted many renowned DJs from around the world.

Don’t expect to find bars and clubs open in the afternoon, many open their doors way past sunset. Bars usually stay open until 4am, while clubs often go until 6am. Lisboetas know how to party!

Lisbon is popular for its huge selection of homegrown wine, but it also has plenty of local craft beer. The city has a couple of “cervejarias,” a local place that manufactures and sells beer, but many bars offer tap beer with famous brands SuperBock and Sagres. Aside from wine and beer, you can always try Ginja (cherry liquor) and the ever-so-famous vinho verde sangria (green wine).

Lisbon bars usually don’t have dress codes, but the city’s superclubs don’t allow slippers or shirts.

Nightlife spots around Lisbon

  • Barrio Alto- The way up to Barrio Alto will be satisfactory when you see this district is the best spot for a lively night in Lisbon. You’ll find every kind of bar, club and live music spots in this district. Plus the narrow streets turn into one huge party, where you’d see people holding drinks on one hand and a cigar on another. Barrio Alto is home to over a hundred bars and restaurants. There is always a bohemian atmosphere in this neighborhood, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. However, since Barrio Alto is still a residential community, many establishments are required to close around 2 a.m., unlike other nightlife spots that are open until sunrise.
  • Expo Park – Located on the very eastern side of Lisbon on the red metro line, the Expo Park (also known as Park of Nations) is a single strip that houses many spots like a karaoke joint, salsa strip, clubs, and bars.
  • Santo Amaro Docks – These docks feature massive warehouses turned into a strip of bars, restaurants and clubs. This place is where many locals go after wild drinking or dancing at Barrio Alto, since it offers a great view of the sunrise while listening to live music, or as you continue the party.
  • Alfama – If you want to experience the best live Fado entertainment, visit Alfama, where the culture all started. Don’t be turned off by old frontages of Fado Houses, since many taverns only feature the most genuine local Fado artists here. Many Fado clubs require reservation, so better call before visiting one.
  • Erasmus Corner – Located at the intersection between Rua do Diário de Notícias and Travessa da Cara, Erasmus Corner is where many hipsters and queer crowd are most alive, probably since the first gay club (Trumps) is located here. Many clubs in the area open their doors until early in the morning.

Off the Beaten Track with a Local in Lisbon

Luciana was wonderful - warm, friendly and knowledgeable. She was patient with our group, and showed us a few neighbourhoods of Lisboa, and stopped to include some light bites (cod cakes, chorizo etc, natas, etc.) along with local wine. We were a group of 6 ladies, and thoroughly recommend the tour - it was a great way to see the city in a 3 hour timespan at a relaxed pace. Thank you Lucy!
