Lisbon Portela - Lisbon Airport

Lisbon may be small compared to other European capitals, but it is home to Lisbon Portela (also known as Lisbon Airport), the largest Portuguese airport and best-equipped airport in Western Europe.

Located at 7 kilometers from the city centre, Lisbon Portela houses two terminals: Terminal 1 for all international flights, where you can find restaurants, shops and a duty-free, while Terminal 2 handles all domestic flights within Portugal. If you’re transferring between terminals, use the free shuttle bus that connects terminals 1 & 2.

Other facilities at Lisbon Airport include ATMs, meeting rooms, bureaux de change, and help desks for Arrivals and Departures. Disabled and baby care facilities are available on both terminals. Free public WIFI is only available for 30 minutes per 12-hour period, so make transportation arrangements before you board the plane.

Airport Transportation in Lisbon

Lisbon Airport is located in the center of the city, so you’d probably reach your hotel an hour or two after landing. Visitors can travel from the airport by one of five means of transport: by bus, via the metro, by rental car, by taxi or by bicycle.

  • Bus – Bus drivers accept ticket payment. Tickets cost €1.80 when purchased on the bus, or you can buy a 24-hour pass for €6. Travel time varies largely, depending on your final destination. o Aerobus – In October 2013, the metro was connected directly to the airport. Aerobus 1 runs every 20 minutes to Cais do Sodre from 7am to 11:20, while Aerobus 2 connects to the financial district from 7:30am to 11:20 pm. Fares are at €1.40 single + €0.50 for the Viva Viagem card. o Bus 744 – Lined outside the Arrivals terminal, this bus is ideal for backpackers without large luggage. It travels through the major streets uptown, going to the old city center. o Carris coaches – Carris city buses stop outside Terminal 1 Arrivals. It connects to various parts of the city through routes 705, 722, 744, and 783 (Marquis of Pombal Square), as well as night route 208 (to downtown Baixa).
  • The Metro – Operating from a station under the airport, The Metro is open for travelers between 6:30 am and 1am. You’ll need a Metro card as ticket, which costs €3.50 for one-way fare, and €6 for a 24-hour pass.
  • Rental Car – Rental car companies at Lisbon Airport include Budget, Hertz, Avis, Sixt and Europcar, all of which have business centers inside the airport.
  • Taxi – Taxis are lined outside Terminal 1. Some taxis charge extra for luggage, while others increase fares up to 20% higher at night time, weekends, and holidays. Most destinations around Lisbon won’t cost above €15, except for journeys to resort towns. Be sure to ask about fares before you depart; some may not follow taxi fares based on meter reading.
  • Bicycle – Lisbon is a bike-friendly city. There are two bicycle paths connecting the airport roundabout. From Terminal 1, the first path is headed West, while the second headed East to the old Expo 98 site, and Lisbon harbor.

Lisbon's Favourites and Hidden Gems Tour

I did a three hour walking tour - Lisbon's Favourite and hidden gems. From the start I could tell how passionate Leonor was about her city. She has a wealth of information on the history of the place, knows her way expertly through the streets and would point out all sorts of details and interesting tidbits. I learned so much and in a short period I became more acquainted with this beautiful city. I highly recommend Leonor, she is friendly, energetic, very knowledgeable and made my visit most enjoyable.
