Travel options in Milan

Driving in Milan can test your patience. As well as being famous for its fashion scene, Milan’s also famous for its busy chaotic roads. If you’re not familiar with how Italians drive, you’ll need to pay even more attention to the rules to ensure you remain safe while driving in Milan.

Parking in Milan can be a battle, especially street parking. There are a number of paid parking garages about, but the cost soon adds up, which is why many of the locals choose to travel by a quicker, more convenient and cheaper form of transport – the scooter, which is an iconic symbol across Italy. Milan attracts thousands of visitors each year, which is why everything is kept in good condition. The roads are clean and regularly repaired unlike the lesser frequented areas of Italy.

A convenient way of getting around Milan as a tourist is by participating in the bike sharing scheme. This bike network can be found across the city. This is quick and easy, especially since a lot of the tourist sites & all the best things to do in Milan are in walking distance from each other. The bikes allow you to go anywhere in the city center and it’s super cheap. Renting a bike for a day in Milan will only cost €2.50.

Other options to get around Milan include tram, train, bus, and metro. Tickets are cheap and only cost €1.50, but if you’re going to be relying on the public transport in Milan a lot, it’s worth getting a 24-hour ticket that costs €4.50.

Travel like a local in Milan

  • Forget public transport and your own car, the way to get around Milan like a local is to get a scooter or as the Italians would call it, a motorino. If you’re planning on staying in Milan for some time, you can easily buy a scooter for a cheap price.
  • Alternatively, there are a number of scooter rental outlets in Milan, so you’ll be able to rent a scooter and zoom around the city like an Italian.

  • Traveling by scooter in Milan will give you a lot more freedom, and it will allow you to visit some of the smaller villages and pretty towns on the outskirts of the city. When there’s nothing on in the city, one of the favorite things for the locals in Milan to do is to get out of town and do some exploring.
  • Locals also know how difficult it is to park in Milan. Owning a scooter allows you to park in small places, meaning you’re less likely to have to pay too much when parking in the city center.

Milanese Home Dinner

While in Milan , my friends and I decided it would be fun to try a dinner with a local. Francesca hosted us in her lovely home. She was warm and welcoming not to mention the delicious meal. Francesca is a fabulous cook. The lasagna was to die for as well as the meatball and vegetables. The dinner was followed by the most perfect tiramisu. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
