Unique things to do in Berlin

  • Enjoy an evening of Berlin Food

One of the quieter, more unique things to do in Berlin, is to enjoy a meal cooked by locals. You’ll get to sample the real flavor of German food, and enjoy some great conversation along the way. It’s a fantastic way to get to know more about the city and its people too — and you’ll find Berliners are proud of their city (and so they should be), so won’t be shy talking about it. Dine
on a schnitzel cooked to perfection, a matching beer or wine and learn all about what makes Berlin an amazing place to live and visit.

  • Experience the B-side of Berlin

Younger, and looking for unique things to do in Berlin? Then take a “b-side” tour — one where you can experience more of Berlin’s underbelly. Berlin, Kreuzberg in particular (during the Cold War and beyond) has a huge underground scene. One that celebrates street art, art of all kinds in fact, experimental music (Kraftwork, anyone?) as well as cutting edge theatre performances. This scene has really been a part of Berlin since the decadent ‘20s — and you can find tours that are run by locals who know the best (and safest) places to visit. Experience the Berlin that few tourists get to!

  • Take a Berlin Cooking Class

Cooking’s important to all cultures, and the German’s are proud of theirs. One of the unique things to do in Berlin is a cooking class where you’ll learn that sharing a meal is just as important as cooking it. During a cooking class you’ll discover some of the history and customs that go with each dish. Traditional German food is often hearty and includes stews with meats and vegetables, accompanied by tasty bread. Don’t be shy. Ask about making a Berliner Beer Stew — most classes run by locals can be planned and tailored ahead of time to your wishes or dietary requirements.

Highlights and Culture of Berlin

We had a fabulous time with Isadora — great personality, easy to get along with. She gave us a good sense of Berlin, and tailored the tour to our interests. As an added bonus, she introduced us to the public transit system. What was at first very intimidating is now easy to navigate.

Jewish Berlin - Unique Walking Tour

Miha gave me and my mother a brilliant customised tour in Berlin looking at the Jewish history and some famous spots related to David Bowie. He showed us so many things that we would not have seen or known about, and was a lovely guy to spend the day with. He really knows his stuff and is so helpful and friendly, I couldn't recommend him enough!

  • See a UFO in Berlin

If you’ve never seen a UFO — here’s your chance. One of the most unique things to do in Berlin is to take a tour run by locals — which focuses on the varied architecture of the city. There are of course many wonderful historical buildings to see — but for something a bit different there’s Berlin’s UFO, or more correctly the Futuro house. This dwelling is a prefabricated, flying saucer-shaped, living complex for the future, and was designed in 1968 by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. Intended to be mass-produced as the way of the future for the 1970s — the concept never caught on, and the example located in Berlin-Treptow is one of the few to survive.

  • Find Out-of-the-way Bars in Berlin

When you take a tour of the sights run by a local — get them to point out some of the best cafes, bars and nightspots to go. One of might be Kreuzberg’s Prinzipal cocktail bar – and a visit and cocktail is one of the unique things to do in Berlin. It needs pointing out too, by someone who knows the area, as the door’s unmarked. Inside you’ll discover waitresses clad in burlesque outfits, and a bar that will take you back to the buzz of the the “roaring 20s” — when Berlin was one of the key places to be in. Today the bar has fantastic cabaret and some of the best cocktails you’ll find anywhere.
