Travel in Paris

The French capital is one of the easiest to get around in and with so many things to do in Paris, you'll have tons of fun. In fact, one of the best ways to see the city is on foot. Paris is actually a surprisingly small city and it’s perfectly possible to walk from one major sight to another. It’s healthy, cheap and you’ll see more of Paris en route but remember to bring sensible walking shoes. Truth to tell, Paris isn’t a great city for cycling though some may disagree. Typically driving in the city is erratic and overly fast. That coupled with very narrow backstreets in parts won’t make cycling a real option for many. For the same reason, car hire might be best avoided unless you’re brave.

Local ways of transportation in Paris

On the other hand, the Metro is fantastic with very regular services and affordable prices. It’s hugely popular with locals and is considered the best way to get about in most situations. Sadly, pickpockets on the Paris Metro often target tourists so do keep your wits about you. Performance artists (sometimes beggars and other scammers) are a regular feature on trains though they’re officially discouraged and you won’t see much of them at peak commuting times, when they’d typically get short-shrift from the locals. Some of the Metro stations are works of art themselves, including their world-famous art nouveau ironwork in places.

You’ll also see genuine street performers in the underpasses and they are good and usually genuine. Buses are also widely used though the route system is a little complicated but local tours through Withlocals will help you to get through that quickly and easily. City-center parking is available in Paris but it’s relatively expensive if of the garage variety – as you would expect where space is at a premium. Parking spaces can be small and cramped, so a real test of your parking skills! Taxis are widely available, licensed, controlled and not too expensive if you stay in the city itself.

Luxury transport in Paris

You can, of course, hire all sorts of luxury transport such as stretch limos and executive saloons etc. These will usually come with an expert chauffer and you’ll be glad of that because some of the city’s traffic systems appear entirely illogical and designed only to generate insanity in the poor drivers who have to navigate them. Private aircraft and helicopter hire is also available if your budget will allow. You can also hire various types of luxury boat for use on the Seine to create an unforgettable experience.

Bonjour Paris! Your Fun Family Introduction

Walking around Paris with Valentina was just like walking around with a friend. We booked a tour in English but since Valentina also speaks Spanish, we ended up doing the Tour in Spanish. This was great for our two young girls to keep up their Spanish.... and she also taught then a few words in French! The tour was a great mix of an intro to Paris, its history, and sites with lots of practical advice... This really was one of the best walking tours we have been on. We highly recommend Valentina!
