Museums in Paris

It will come as no surprise to know that Paris is perhaps the best city in the world for museums – or certainly one of the best! They’re quite simply everywhere and they cater to all tastes and interests. Visiting museums is one of the best things to do in Paris. Typically French people are brought up to respect and understand ‘high culture’ and that’s represented by how many visit museums and galleries. Contrary to expectation, not all museums are pretentious or stuffy. There is, for example, one dedicated to the history of the cinema and another to mediaeval life. Points worth noting though are that some of the top Paris museums, notably the Louvre, can be very busy and controlled access to some of the top exhibits may be in place at peak demand times. Expect your baggage to be searched and you may be required to leave larger cases and bags at reception. There are multi-site tickets available which are great value and your Withlocals tour guide will be able to help you secure those.

Top 10 Museums Paris, France

  • The Louvre. Arguably the most famous museum in the world. You can easily spend DAYS marveling over the 300,000 paintings and other displayed items.
  • Musée d’Orsay. The great center of impressionist and post-impressionist works by Renoir, Cezanne and Degas etc. This was once a Paris railway station.
  • Picasso Museum. Immensely famous and popular, this mainly contains only Picasso’s work though there are some items from other artist taken from his own collection.
  • Natural History Museum. Technically a part of the Sorbonne University, it’s also a major research establishment.
  • Army Museum. This museum in the National Hôtel des Invalides and it houses a vast collection of ‘militaria’ in which Napoleon I figures prominently.
  • Pompidou Centre. A museum that’s almost as well-known for its own external architecture as its internal exhibits.
  • The Museum of Tokyo. Globally famous for its modern and sometimes controversial art forms.
  • The National Museum of the Middle Ages (Hôtel de Cluny). Dedicated to stunningly beautiful medieval art.
  • Rodin Museum. Probably the best-known sculptor, his works including The Thinker and The Kiss are on display in two separate locations.
  • Carnavalet Museum. Of real local interest, this museum covers the history of France and Paris. The museum is in 2 ancient mansions and has over 100 rooms.

3 Particularly good museums in Paris

  • The Museum of Tokyo is a vibrant and interactive space that pushes our understanding of art to the limit. Forget fixed exhibitions and instead expect to see constantly changing backdrops of all types of art. There are special exhibitions and workshops for children. It’s open from lunchtime until midnight. It’s perhaps not for those who have fixed conventional views on what art is or should be!
  • Museum of Natural History. Everybody likes ancient bones and dinosaurs. This large multi-site museum is renowned for its education establishment too and it includes a gallery of Geology and Minerology, a Paleontology section, Comparative Anatomy displays, a menagerie and even a herbarium with over 8,000,000 plant species. Oh yes, it also has 3 zoos and 3 botanical parks!
  • The Louvre. What more can be said about the museum that sets global standards? To enjoy it properly you should spend some time planning your visit and focus on certain exhibits because you won’t be able to see everything in one visit. It’s also worth visiting the outside areas at the Tuileries and Carousel gardens, which are part of the Museum.

Paris Kickstart Tour with a Local

A non-tour tour. We essentially followed someone through the streets of the Left Bank. No history, no insights, no perspective, just a pleasant person that sort of dragged us around without saying much. I thought we had signed up for a tour- not sure this was a tour, not sure what to call it, other than a letdown. Would have been better to just go for a walk on our own.

Anne was a great guide; she was very flexible in allowing us to guide her with what we wanted to try and the speed that we wanted to travel.
