Seeing the unique in Paris
Paris is not short of tours. You can just attach yourself on the back of one of the colorless mass tourist groups as they trundle around the big obvious city-center sights like the Eiffel Tower. Maybe you’ll also get very lucky and find that the guide is, actually, French even if not a local. However, as any Parisian will tell you, this city is not just about the top 3-4 household name sights. Anybody can visit those. Rather it’s about history, byways, hidden gems and a unique life experience. Nobody who is an outsider can conduct tours around that aspect of Paris. That is the job of a local specialist and one who has lived and breathed the city over an extended period. If you’ve lived here for years and the city has become part of your DNA then you can really help others to explore it. Otherwise, Paris exploration becomes a matter of chance and compromise. If you’d like to remove chance from your time in Paris and just aren’t willing to settle for the ‘one size fits all’ tourist experience, then it’s worth considering a local guide.
