What is Withlocals?

Withlocals is an online marketplace that brings people together from all around the world to learn about new cultures and create new memories through food and experiences. Local hosts offer their services directly to guests and give them unforgettable experiences. Looking for unique, out of the box experiences? Join us!

What kind of experiences can I book?

We focus on 2 categories, Food Experiences Withlocals and Things To Do Withlocals, in which you can book experiences. This could range from a dinner at a family’s home to a mountain hike to hidden places, or even a traditional stone-carving workshop.

What does the signup process look like?

You can sign up by creating an account via our website. You’ll receive a confirmation e-mail after which you have to choose to sign up either as a host or a guest. After you’ve selected to become a guest, please fill in your profile as detailed as possible. Once you’re done, you can start searching for one of our unique experiences.

What is Withlocals Originals.

Withlocals Originals are special offers put together by Withlocals based on the preferences of our guests to guarantee you the best of the city your way. What makes these offers even better is that you can select the host of your choice and personalize it the way you want it. Of course the experience is 100% private, guaranteeing it to be local and truly memorable!

Should I book a dinner party or a private experience?

Book a dinner party if you’re looking for an amazing social time with multiple guests

A dinner party is an event you can book on a specific date your host has put up as available. Because the host is 100% available on that date, your booking is automatically confirmed. A dinner party is open for anybody to book so expect to meet other great people around the dinner table.

Book a private experience if you’re looking for a cozy experience with people you know and your host

A private experience is just that, private. You book a date when you want the experience to take place and your host will confirm the booking according to his/her availability. Once the booking is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email from Withlocals with the contact details of the host so you can be in touch until the date when you’ll meet up.

In which countries can I book experiences?

Withlocals is currently present in 11 countries: Thailand, Nepal, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, The Philippines and Sri Lanka. Withlocals recently launched in The Netherlands and has plans to expand in Europe.

Are there any booking fees applicable?

No, the prices you see on the website are the prices you pay as a guest. No additional fees are applied.


When will I be charged for a booking?

You will not be charged for a booking until it is confirmed. Once it is confirmed by the host, the payment will be processed and collected by Withlocals. You will never pay before the booking is confirmed by the host unless you book a dinner party.

A dinner party booking means you receive instant confirmation so the payment is also collected by Withlocals.

It doesn’t matter if it takes two days or two months before the booking takes place. Usually you pay 100% upfront. If PayPal is not available or the host prefers cash payment, 20% needs to be paid online and 80% (the remaining amount) to the host directly after the experience.

Who do I pay once making a booking?

You need to make a full payment to Withlocals via PayPal or by credit card. Withlocals releases the payment to the local hosts via PayPal, once the experience has taken place.

In some countries however PayPal is not available for local hosts, so in that case you’ll make a first down payment to Withlocals and the remaining amount needs to be paid to your host in cash during or after an experience.

When do I need to make the payment?

Once you have made a booking and the booking is accepted, the payment will directly be processed and collected by Withlocals. It doesn’t matter if it takes 2 days or 2 months before the experience to take place.

What payment methods do you offer?

You can pay your booking via credit card or PayPal to Withlocals.

Can I cancel my booking as a guest and do I receive a refund?

Up to 14 days before a booked experience is due to take place you can cancel your booking and we will refund 80% of the initial payment made, taking 20% as a cancelation fee. If you cancel your booking within 14 days of the experience date or if you don’t show up at all, you are not eligible for a refund.


How do I book an experience on request?

If you would like an experience to be taken place on another time or date than offered, you can request a date by clicking the “request a date” button. Together you can agree upon a date and time. Subsequently the host can create the event and inform you to book it by selecting the requested date and time.

How can I get in touch with a host?

Before making a booking, you can contact a host via the communication system of our platform. After the booking is placed by you and confirmed by the host, both of you receive each other’s contact details, in order to stay in touch until the date of the experience.

How do I get to a specific location of an experience?

It varies per experience. Unless it’s explicitly mentioned, a pick-up/transfer is not included. However, some hosts offer it as an additional service.

What do I get when I book an experience on Withlocals?

Each experience will have a detailed description on the Withlocals website. This will include the highlights and more specifically what is included and what is not.

How does the instant confirmation work?

Once you make a booking it will be confirmed automatically without waiting for a host to reply to your request. Pick a memory for life and be sure that your booking is accepted!

In what language do I need to communicate? Does the host speak English?

Most of our hosts speak English, but the level of language skill will vary per host. On our website the hosts indicate which language(s) they speak.

I don’t see the exact location with the experience, how do I know where to go?

Before placing a booking, you’ll see the approximate location of the experience. Once you make a booking, the full contact and location details of the hosts will be shared with you for further contact and to help you arrange the meeting.

Why do I not see the contact details such as email address or phone number of a host?

We respect the privacy of our community and that’s why we ask you to postpone sending your contact details until a booking is confirmed. Immediately after confirmation, you’ll receive an email with the information you need to stay in touch with the host until the booking date.

How does the review system work?

Reviews are very important to the users of Withlocals. You can only review an experience you’ve booked. You will be asked to review your experience with a host after it has taken place. By reporting bad and rewarding great hosts and experiences you are able to help improving the quality of the offers and give guarantees for other guests.

What’s the difference between a private and group experience?

Both type of experiences are offered via our website. With a private experience, a group of people who know each other book the experience. You will be the only one(s) doing the experience. With a group experience however, the group of people don’t know each other upfront.

Personalized experiences

What is a personalized experience?

A personalized experience is a tailor made offer for you. You can simply let a host know your requests and the host can subsequently make you a personalized offer.

How can I request a personalized experience?

Requesting a personalized offer is very easy. Simply go to the experience you want to get personalized and click the “contact host” button to let the host know your preferences.
Do you want to request a totally different experience? No problem, you can also contact the host to request a completely new offer.

Is a personalized experience always private?

Yes. Because the experience is customized for you, it’s not possible for others to book this experience. That’s why it’s always a private experience.

I received a personalized offer. What do I need to do?

Great! Hopefully it is the offer you were dreaming of. If so, simply click on the ‘book’ button and book your personalized experience! If you want to request some changes, use the ‘request changes’ button to contact the host for adjusting the offer. When you’re 100% satisfied with the offer, you can book it right away!

Safety and trust

How do I know if a host can be trusted?

Withlocals is an open marketplace, which means that the booking is made between you and the local host. To ensure safe and trustworthy experiences, we follow 3 important steps:

1. Quality check by Withlocals
Once a host signs up on the website, we perform a thorough check from our headquarters in The Netherlands. We verify basic information, such as name, address, social profiles, phone number, ID, payment details and description of the experience.

2. Verification check by ambassadors
We work with an extensive network of 100+ Withlocals ambassadors in Asia and The Netherlands. Each new host will be visited and checked by one of our ambassadors. They will check the location, take professional pictures, meet the host and approve the experience.

3. Review system
Every guest gets the opportunity to review his/her experience with a host. The more reviews, the more people experienced this host and the more you can trust the host and the experience he or she offers.

What happens if I have a bad experience with a host?

In case you have a bad experience with a host, Withlocals will get in touch with both guest and host to get at the bottom of the situation and to find a solution together. Your happiness counts more than anything!

Will I get my money back if a host cancels or doesn’t show up?

If a host cancels the booking or does not show up this is very inconvenient. In this case the full amount will be refunded to you.

How do I know if the food is good?

Our hosts go through several checks during the sign-up process. All of our hosts are also visited and reviewed by our local ambassadors hand we have a review system where you can read reviews about hosts and their experiences. The best part compared to a restaurant? You’re eating with the local hosts in their homes, it doesn’t get more authentic than this!
