What you can expect

What’s so special about these people? Where did they come from? What’s shaped their culture, traditions, and cuisine? All can be revealed when you join me of this private tour.

As a fifth-generation Peranakan I can help you discover the origins and culture of a unique group of people: the Peranakans, exclusively found in South-East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines). Peranakans are a mix of mainly ethnic Chinese whose language and culture have been shaped by Malay influences. The word "Peranakan" comes from Malay "per anak kan". "Anak" means child, so this phrase means "a locally born child" or "a child of this region". There are many stories about how this culture began, and I’m eager to share them with you.

On this tour you can experience a local public bus ride to the Peranakan cultural district of Katong. Enjoy a delicious rainbow-colored Peranakan cake. And see a wonderfully ornate display of traditional garments and hand-beaded slippers. You can also take a trip back in time when we visit the rich and colorful displays at the Peranakan Museum. There is so much to see and do, so get ready for a deep dive into a new and different culture.

Along the way, ask me as many questions as you want – as a local, if I don’t know the answers I’ll probably know someone who does. And at any time, if you see something that you want to know more about, let me know and we can take time to get closer. This is a tour you could never find in any tourist guide. It gives you personal access into the lives of the locals.

This tour is 100% private, just for you. So if there is anything in particular that you want to see or do, just let me know and I’ll do my best to shape the tour to your wishes.

Additional tours include cooking, beading and dancing workshops and are available on request at cost extra. Please feel free to ask me, if you like to know more.

Who is the most important person in the world to me? The person standing in front of me is, at any given time. I like to live in the moment, one a day at a time. I hope my guests become my friends, and have the most meaningful and fun experience possible. Being of service to others is rewarding to me, and I have made it my life's work.

I have been working as a Professional Licensed Tourist Guide since 2001. I got into this line of work when I was 21 years old by sheer dumb luck. I saw an advertisement in the local newspaper for a Tourism school providing a course in Tourist Guiding and applied for it. After 2 rounds of interviews, I was selected, and went on to receive the Best Trainee Award for my batch of students. The rest, as they say, is history.

I love my job. To me, it's not just work. It's a passion. As I meet more people and share information and experiences, I realize I end up learning a great deal from my guests as well. The exchange of thoughts and ideas is beautiful to me.

In the course of my work, I've been fortunate to have had so many amazing experiences. I've met some celebrities, some dignitaries and the best ordinary folks as well. I have conducted tours and transfers for luxury cruise passengers, board members of various multi-national companies, government officials, Olympic athletes and officials, and legal and medical professionals. Being a Best Tourism Host finalist in the 2008 Tourism Awards Singapore was one of the highlights of my career.

I would like to put the knowledge I've attained to good use in designing tours that cater to your specific needs and interests. Feel free to tell me what you'd like to see and do. I'm just the girl next door, and I can't wait to meet you and show you my Singapore. Let's have fun together!"
