Things to do in France

In the wine producing regions in France, you can sample the local produce out of the vineyards free through “dégustations”. Avoid the big chateaux producers and the tourist trail traps and go for the secret backroads, which is where you’ll find authentic wine and bargains. The French love cycling and it helps you to get off the beaten track and discover the stunning French countryside and deserted ruined castles, rivers and bathing lakes in say, the Dordogne. France also has some fantastic and very quiet sandy beaches that are popular with locals for various sports including surfing (followed up by a barbeque) but you’ll need to know where those sands are. Why not take a boat trip to explore one of several offshore islands around the coast such as Iles Chausey.

Another great joy is antique and treasure hunting in the city center markets and “Brocantes” – huge fun if you know how to play the game and spot the genuine articles! Mass tourism approaches will allow you to see a lot of ‘tourist-guide’ France. What they typically can’t do though is to help to you experience this beautiful country. That’s why the Withlocals approach provides local tours with local people because they will know the hidden secret gems of France better than anyone else.

Top 10 things to do in France

  • Paris Galleries and Museums. Paris is more than just the Louvre and the Musée D’Orsay. Seek out some of the less well known museums. You’ll find Asian treasures, medical and anatomical exhibits as well as a wine museum.
  • Paris flea markets. It may still be possible to find genuine bargains in many of Paris’ markets. Try the markets at Montreuil and Porte de Vanves or the more, these days, upmarket Puces de St Ouen.
  • Lascaux. The caves of Lascaux are the site of France’s most famous set of cave paintings. Discovered in the 1940s this magnificent collection comprises over 600 animal figures being 15,000 to 17,000 years old.
  • Loire Valley Castles. These are a group of 42 spectacular castles visited by more than 3.3 million tourists every year. Many sit impressively on the banks of the river in almost fairytale settings in this beautiful part of France.
  • Vineyard Tours. Touring a winery or two can provide a fascinating insight into France’s national beverage.
  • Cycle tours. What better way to see France than by bike and there are some spectacular routes, ranging from the gentle like along the banks of the Loire to the more strenuous in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
  • Surfing. The West Atlantic coast from Brittany right down to the Spanish border provides some fantastic opportunities for surfing and some amazing beaches.
  • Trips to the Iles. Just off the northern coast you’ll find the Iles Chausey a very small but inhabited island where bird watching and shellfish gathering are the order of the day. Boat trips leave from Granville.
  • Dune du Pilat. Europe’s largest sand dune just has to be climbed to appreciate the views of Cap Ferat.
  • Normandy Cider trail. Normandy is renowned for its cider and there’s a 25 mile (40K) route east of Caen offering the chance to sample some of the best along with other apple-based beverages like Pommeau and Calvados.

Highlights in France

  • Lascaux. Visits to the original caves are no longer possible for the general public due deterioration of the paintings. Lascaux II, situated nearby, houses a reconstruction of some of the most famous images.
  • Loire Valley castles. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site there are probably too many castles to do justice to on one visit. Some like Amboise and Chenonceau are justifiably world famous.
  • Vineyard tours. Just about every wine producing region has its own particular style from light Loire or Alsatian varieties to the more heavyweight offerings of Burgundy and the Rhone valley, to the sparkling Champagnes and Cremants. Take advice about what to drink with which dish.

Street Art & Graffiti Workshop: Leave your Mark in Paris

What a great way to wrap up a week of tourist Paris! Danilo taught us how to create cool street art and then we hung out at the fabulous off beat area where the locals make it happen! And created our own on the wall! Great fun and adventure with Danilo. Highly recommended.

Paris Favourite Food tour: the 10 Tastings

We had the best time on the tour! Maria had so much local knowledge and took us to some amazing places. She explained their history and about the food in an interesting and passionate way. We went to so many places that we could never have found on our own. The food was incredible and Maria was engaging, bright and really easy to chat to. We could recommend this tour, and Maria, to anyone wanting to have an authentic and passionate insight into the food culture of Paris!

Paris Kickstart Tour with a Local

Lucien was a wonderful guide! He was my first impression of Paris since this was my first time, and I wanted a proper introduction of the city on my first day. He showed me some of the touristy spots but made the most beautiful and intriguing stops along the way. Being a foodie, he showed me where all the good local spots were that wouldn't break the bank. He answered all my questions, even the harder ones, and was open and honest about this city he loves so dearly. He even sat down with me, pulled out a map, and circled all the areas of what he thought I might be interested in. He gave great recommendations of where to go for food, drink, and entertainment. He truly went out of his way to make sure I experienced Paris to the fullest! Thank you Lucien!
